4 reasons to install a sectional door on a shed or small garage

Inspiration to help you choose the right carriage house door for your garage

If you are building any kind of small structure – a shed, a barn, or a small garage – you are probably already thinking about the type of door you’ll need. A sectional door is one option, but is this the best idea for the type of structure? Here are four reasons that this type of door could be exactly what you need.

Before you decide…

Before you decide for sure on your sectional door, be sure that it can be installed. To be able to install a sectional garage door on a small structure, the building must have enough space so that the door can be lifted up under the roof. The minimum size must be at least 112 ft2 of floor space, meaning about 8 feet wide by 14 feet deep. As well, there should ideally be at least 5 inches (127 mm) of headroom over the head of the door, plus 2 more inches (51 mm) if you are installing an electric door opener.

Four pros of sectional garage doors

  • You can access your building without shoveling snow. Instead of having two 36" x 78" wood or steel doors that open outward, you just have the sectional door that makes it easy for you to get in in any weather.
  • You don’t lose storage space on the walls the way you do when your doors open inward. A sectional door that opens by moving up toward the interior of the roof allows you to maximize the storage space in your garage.
  • You can store larger items in your smaller building because you get the full size of the opening to pull in things like snowmobiles or ATVs. If you put two access doors side by side, you are limited to a maximum width of 72 inches (or 6 feet).
  • With a sectional door, you can install an electric garage door opener, which isn’t doable with two access doors. You don’t have to get off your ride to get inside, which makes it more convenient and more comfortable for you.

Sectional door options

Sizes

They are several size options for sectional doors. The minimum door dimensions are 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, with no limit to the maximum width, to the nearest inch (25 mm). The most common door heights are between 6' 6" and 7' 0" (1.98 and 2.1 m).

Door designs

There are many products to choose from: flush, with thin lines, rectangular embossed designs, or even with decorative overlays reminiscent of arched carriage doors of the 50s. It’s very popular to coordinate the look of your smaller shed with the look of your main garage, and we can help with that.

Windows

Windows make a great addition to your shed for both light and style. If there are no other windows on your shed, they are easy to add in the sectional door. Add a touch of elegance while also coordinating with your main garage door.

Decorative hardware

If your garage door has an arched or carriage‑house style, you can add decorative hardware that mimics the look of hinges and handles in wrought iron found on traditional swing doors. These are an excellent addition for getting that timeless look that works with so many house styles.
