Quick and Easy Garage Organization

Before the organizationAfter the organization

Many homeowners have garages that are so disorganized they can barely get their car in them. This has the unfortunate effect of removing from the use of one of the most valuable spaces a homeowner has in their entire home. Here you’ll discover some easy solutions to organizing your garage and, as you’ll see, it probably won’t take as much time as you think.

Sort that Mess

To get started, you’ll want to sort out everything in your garage. All you have to do to accomplish this is to take your various items and put them in piles according to use. For example, your fishing gear, gardening equipment, household items, fabrics and other supplies should each be grouped together according to how you use them. This is the first step in getting things stored away in an organized fashion.

Know Your Options

Home improvement stores have many affordable options for storing items in your garage. These include elements that are designed to be installed on your ceiling and walls, as well as bins and crates, which are also excellent resources.

Your largest items will likely require hooks for proper storage. Most medium‑sized items can be easily placed on shelving. Smaller items should be grouped together in bins and crates, providing a great storage solution for them. Remember that, when you start putting things on shelves, you’ll want to put the items that you use the most frequently in the positions that are the most easily accessed.

Use the Bins

Storage bins can be used as incredibly efficient solutions for organization. Start by taking the piles of items you organized and placing them neatly into bins. After you have them all loaded up, affix a label to the bin that tells you exactly what’s inside of it. When you put the bins on the shelving, ensure that these labels are facing outward so that you can read them easily.

For your sports equipment, crates are ideal solutions. It’s easy to store balls and other items in these and, of course, it’s easy to find them when you need them. Some longer sports equipment may require longer bins, such as your hockey sticks, golf clubs, baseball bats and so forth. Storing sports equipment in this way provides very good protection against damage in addition to good organization.

Store on the Walls

You’re going to want to put some time into organizing the shelves themselves. When you start putting up shelving, consider what’s actually going on those specific shelves. The largest items you have are going to require the widest and longest shelves, of course. It’s very important to make sure that you choose the right types of shelving for your needs. You can also use shelves to store power tools. If you have expensive items or dangerous items, make sure you get a locked cabinet to store those in.

For your walls, consider using a pegboard solution as a way to store your smallest items. This provides an easy way to organize everything visually and, of course, it keeps everything within ready access.

Ceiling Systems

If you have a ceiling system you want to install, make certain that you check the path of your garage door so you don’t interfere with it inadvertently. Remember that you can use your ceiling to store larger items by suspending them from hooks. This is an ideal solution for bicycles and other bulky items that need to be protected and stored in a fashion that keeps them out of the way.

Label Well

Be sure your labels are thorough and that they contain all the information you need. In addition to this, use permanent markers or use preprinted labels to ensure that they don’t fade and become illegible after a time. Provided you have them spun outward so that you can see them from a distance, you should be able to save yourself a great deal of frustration when you need something in the future.
