Must-Have Tools & Equipment for Every Garage

Must-Have Tools & Equipment for Every Garage

Are you in the process of turning your garage into a viable workspace? If so, just think of all of the projects you'll be able to complete, once you're finished! Before you get started, on your first project, you need tools.

To make things less confusing, here's a list of must‑have garage equipment that you'll typically need on a day‑to‑day basis. Once you acquire these standard garage tools, you'll probably wonder how you ever managed without them.

Workbench

It goes without saying that you need ample space to work. That's where a workbench comes into play. Opt for one that's heavy enough so that it won't move around while you're working. It doesn't have to be fancy, unless you want it to be. Purchase pegboard to hang on the wall behind it, for storage.

In regard to adequate lighting, a 4‑foot shop light typically works well. For best results, screw it into the wall above the pegboard.

Do you need a bench vice? That really depends. It comes in handy when you are:

  • Cutting conduit
  • Gluing something
  • Using sandpaper
  • Doing metalwork
  • Using a saw
  • And more!

If you find that you stand at the bench, more than you originally thought you would, consider investing in an anti‑fatigue mat. Your feet and legs will love you for it!

Safety Gear

Safety gear consists of things such as work gloves, a first‑aid kit and safety glasses. If you wear eyeglasses, you might want to invest in a pair of prescription safety goggles. They're more comfortable than trying to wear glasses and goggles at the same time.

Lighting

In addition to lighting above your workbench, it's a good idea to have a portable shop light on a tripod stand. This type of halogen lamp gives off a tremendous amount of light. It comes in extremely handy when you're working on a vehicle or looking for small parts or screws that you've accidently dropped or misplaced.

Storage/Toolbox

To be efficient, every garage needs adequate storage. You'll probably want a combination of storage shelves and drawers, along with several toolboxes. Purchasing toolboxes or chests on wheels provides an added level of convenience.

Hand Tools

These are just a few hand tools to consider, when setting up your garage:

  • Hammers
  • Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
  • Saws
  • Wrenches (crescent and socket)
  • Pliers (vice grip and needle nose)
  • Hex keysv
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Utility knife
  • Power Tools

Power Tools

These are just a few power tools to consider, when setting up your garage:

  • Cordless drill and drill bits
  • Sander
  • Router
  • Planer
  • Circular saw
  • Air Compressor

Initially, you might not think you need an air compressor. But, the machine is quite versatile. Chances are, you'll use it more than originally anticipated. Not only is the air compressor used to air up tires, it's also appropriate for projects that include painting or staining (with an airbrush), blowing sawdust and other debris off your workbench and most importantly using a wide variety of pneumatic (air‑driven) power tools.

When buying an air compressor, it's recommended that you purchase one that's a level up from what you originally intend to pay. Having access to more powerful machine means that you can do more with it.

Of course, it's not necessary to purchase everything at once. Rome wasn't built in a day and the same thing holds true, in regard to most people's garage tools and garage equipment acquisition.
