Garage flooring options: What’s the best choice for me?

Garage flooring options

Garage flooring absolutely must be durable, it must be easy to clean and ideally have a good stain‑resistance level. But when you’re choosing a new garage floor, you also need to take into account two other very important factors: Your budget and your personal tastes.

In this article, you’ll find information about the three most common garage flooring options, hopefully it will help you make an informed choice.

The cheapest option

Latex‑based paint and acrylic‑based paints and stains. By far the cheapest option, and the easiest to install. By opting for paint, you can take on the work yourself, and choose from a wide range of colours. Paints are relatively durable, but you will have to reapply them every few years. And while they are easy to clean, they stain very easily, which could be a significant downside depending on the activities you do in your garage.

The Mid‑Range option

Epoxy paint. Like latex‑based paint and acrylic‑based paints and stains, you can apply epoxy paint yourself, if you know what you’re doing and have all the right equipment. If not, you might want to hire a flooring professional to do it for you. Epoxy paint is more expensive than the former category, but it is much more durable, it’s also stain and water resistant. You can even choose the finish by selecting different chips and flakes. No wonder it’s the consumers’ top choice for garage flooring.

The mid-range option

The expensive option

Tiles. Tiles are by far the most durable option for garage flooring. There are several different tiling options. You could go for rubber snap‑together tiles or rubber matting, which is very easy to clean and come in many different colours. There’s also vinyl composite tiles, like the kind you see in grocery stores, again these are very easy to clean and don’t stain easily. Finally, and this is the most expensive tiling option, you could go for porcelain tiles. Porcelain tiles are thicker and more durable than ceramic tiles, yet still easy to clean.
